Are parents expected to help in the classroom?
Yes, parents are required to work in every class their students are attending each semester. Although students come to STAR classes for instruction, parents are ultimately responsible for their student's achievement. Parents are scheduled at the beginning of each semester and will receive a Parent Helper Schedule. They are required to work a maximum of two times a semester in a one day per week class, and a maximum of four times a semester in a two day per week class. A $20.00 fee per class period will be charged when a parent fails to help at their scheduled time. Parents are beneficial to instructors by helping grade papers, logging scores in their grade books, taking attendance and distributing handouts. Being a helper in the classroom provides the parent with first-hand information on classroom instruction and activities, while allowing parents to observe student behavior, participation, and the expectations of the instructor.
If a conflict arises with your scheduled parent helper date, it is your responsibility to find a substitute parent helper. Please inform the Site Coordinator of any changes to the schedule.
