It’s Summer! Work Efficiently, Rest Sufficiently
It’s summer! Time to catch the children up on math, read those literature assignments that fell off the lesson plans, and revisit all those amazing science experiments that were planned for this past school year!
OR…is it time to catch up on some quality one-on-one time with each of your children, and read that novel you have been putting off because you’ve been too busy?
Work Efficiently, Rest Sufficiently
Our Creator intends for us to rest in order to restore our souls. We were not created to be pitchers always pouring out our precious contents, and never refilling.
When King David was in the desert fleeing from Saul, he grew weary, and needed rest. He cried out to God saying, “Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me” Psalm 51:12.
Choosing work over restoration can rob you of the joy of your salvation. This is not something new to our modern way of life, at all. Centuries ago, David wrote, “Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you” Psalm 116:7.
So, consider summer as the time to rest your soul so you can find restoration. If you can find activities that feed your intellect, provide physical exercise, and bring your family together for some fun, you may perhaps find there is peace in your soul.
Reflect on the following:
- Lord, am I placing too much emphasis on the academics of homeschooling, so much so that I can’t enjoy summer?
- God, am I finding my identity in what I achieve instead of who I am in Christ?
- Lord, show me ways to find restoration to my soul this summer.
Gracious Father, I know that your desire is for me to work efficiently, rest sufficiently. Thank you for instructing me through your Word, and showing me how to serve my family in a way that honors You. Remind me to find ways to rest, renew, and restore this summer.
