Tips

Choose music to show off your voice and acting ability to your best advantage.

Choose a song to fit the age, voice category and type of character you want to play, not to fit yourself. For example, if you are 18 years old but can look and play 12; if you are hoping to get specific role; if you are 16 or 18 but can look older; or if you have a more trained vocal technique.

Comply with any information you are given.

Make sure to comply with all direction you are given (the number of bars to prepare, style of selection, music for accompanist, memorization of selection, etc.). You will greatly increase your chance of being considered for a role if you choose your audition selection wisely and comply with audition rules. Important consideration: Don't pick a song with a very difficult accompaniment if you want the pianist to be able to play well for your audition. (Biola Youth Theatre provides an accompanist for auditions.)

Production Audition Information

Come prepared to sing 30-40 seconds of a song. Choose a selection that will 'show off your voice.' Bring the piano music with you and have the section you will be singing clearly marked. BYT will provide an accompanist for you. You may not sing to a tape or any other accompaniment.

Wear comfortable clothing you can move and dance in. Wear a shirt long enough to cover your midriff when your hands are lifted over your head. Girls may wear a leotard under their clothing if they would like.

Wear closed toed sneakers or jazz shoes.

Bring something to do while you wait.

Smile.
